The European dimension has become primordial in defining the regulatory environment of banking and financial systems. The Single European Act, adopted in 1986, gave rise to the development of directives prepared by the European Commission, designed to encourage the creation of a single market for merchandise, services, capital, and people. Thus, in the banking and financial fields, a common regulatory system has been developed. Each member state is under an obligation to introduce these directives into its own internal law in order that the latter thereby conforms to the new European standards.
